Essay / Educational Objectives - 1063
After watching this video, I began to wonder if our schools are actually preparing our students for the real world. I believe our education system expects our students to learn a certain amount of information and regurgitate it to their teachers in the form of tests such as EOGs. With this style of teaching, other subjects suffer. All year long, teachers prepare students to pass the EOGs while neglecting other areas. Naturally, you have students who will shine. What about students who don't learn well with this type of teaching method? What about students who learn best through hands-on activities and working together in groups? I believe that when multiple teaching methods are used, our students will succeed in the global world. Today's classrooms do not incorporate enough real-world examples to help our students understand everything that exists in this world. When only 26% of the information learned in the classroom is actually relevant to the real world, we have a problem. What I began to see throughout my classes was change on the horizon. More and more teachers are trying to incorporate concrete examples to help better anchor an idea in their students' minds. Last spring, I saw an example of this during my internship. Students learned about the process of an assembly line and that everyone has a certain job to do in a factory. To help students better understand this process, the teacher set up a taco assembly line. Each student had to fill out an order form indicating what they wanted on their taco. Next, students were divided into teams to tackle the purchase orders. Each student was assigned to a station such as lettuce, tomatoes, onions, meat, etc. As the purchase order moved down the assembly line, the student had to be careful to have their item checked. At the end of the assembly line, a manager would check the order form as well as the taco to ensure the final product was correct before passing it to the customer. Through this, students not only took the information they read from the book but also incorporated their practical activities to better understand and appreciate the different jobs associated with a factory..
