Essay / The choices in The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost and John...
“The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost and “A&P” by John Updike are two works that incorporate using your own personal choice to make decisions that will impact your life. The stories show the luxury of having the ability to make your own choices. Both stories contain themes of personal choices, I believe the decision Sammy makes gives readers a better understanding of the impact you have with your choices. In “The Road Not Taken,” the theme is personal choice. The poem begins with a man faced with a decision to make. Two roads and one man to travel them. When someone is faced with two options, they usually weigh both. Perhaps by weighing the pros and cons between the two choices. The narrator does just that, he states "And I looked at one as far as I could". The speaker considers what this route has to offer before considering the other. We discover that the roads “had traveled them in much the same way,” meaning that the paths had been taken or chosen in the same way. The poem shows that he thought he would have another chance on the other road. So, if this were true, personal choice wouldn't be so important if you had the option of doing things more or twice. When the narrator states that he has decided to take a path less traveled, it can show his character and personality. In the article "Frost's "Road" & "Woods" redux, Dan Brown states "Given the evidence, who's to say which road we couldn't have taken" (12). This shows that perhaps he didn't didn't even take a path and so it was the least traveled His personal choice defines him Sometimes, these choices are able to determine your destiny.
