    Without peacekeepers from different nations around the world, people would not be able to live their daily lives peacefully. In fact, they would be exposed to threats and dangers and would end up living under the pressure of fear. Peacekeeping is the activity of sending troops and military forces alongside the United Nations to contain the fire and maintain world peace. (The Canadian Encyclopedia) Canada actively participates in United Nations peacekeeping missions and is known for its support of peace around the world. This helps Canada build an admirable reputation as a peacekeeper that other countries should emulate, by participating in the UNSK, UNEF and UNSF. (Borda, p.12) The Korean War began at 4 a.m. on June 25, 1950, when North Korean troops crossed the 38th Parallel Line. At that time, Korea was divided into two different nations, South Korea and North Korea. The North invaded the South to expand its communist presence since South Korea was democratic. (Land of Morning Calm – 2 minutes) The United Nations Security Council took urgent action in the face of this invasion and insisted on the deployment of military troops within the 10 member countries, including Canada. Canada's contribution to the Korean War as a peacekeeper began on July 20, 1950. The 426th Transport Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force flew to aid South Korea. Then, the second battalion, Canada's peacekeeping contingent, arrived in South Korea and successfully prevented the North Koreans from taking over the town of Kapyung, South Korea. Canada also took action by joining with other countries such as the 28th British Commonwealth Brigade on the Han River. With the help of Canada and other countries, UN forces were able to advance to the 38th parallel line in 1951.
