Essay / Minimum Drinking Age Essay - 1098
The minimum drinking age law is twenty-one and has been implemented in the United States for forty years . During the 1970s, some states lowered the legal drinking age, leading to an increase in major drunk driving accidents and alcohol-related deaths. This law aims to protect the younger generation of society and the drinking age of twenty-one is very effective. Even though this law would provide an overall safer environment, people still want to change the law on the drinking age limit to eighteen. They think that once they turn eighteen and become adults, then they should be able to do whatever they want. The current drinking age of twenty-one in the United States should not be lowered because of its effectiveness in protecting adolescents and young adults, creating an overall safer society. Consumption of alcoholic beverages at a young age can cause many problems in their current and future lives. Studies have shown that fifty percent of adolescents who drink alcohol by the age of eighteen become more dependent on alcohol, while nine percent of adolescents who drink at twenty-one are very little likely to become dependent on alcohol. These statistics clearly show a major difference and the drinking age should definitely stay at twenty-one. Federal agencies stated that "research indicates that the human brain continues to develop into the early 20s and that exposure of the developing brain to alcohol may have long-term effects on intellectual abilities." (Hanson 1). This shows that drinking at an earlier age can have many consequences that can affect your body (brain). This is a serious and dangerous issue, and this law should not allow students to damage their brains. In addition, excessive alcohol consumption before the age of twenty...... middle of paper ...... causes problems (car accidents, fights, etc.). Bartenders and waitresses will also be allowed to distribute as much alcohol as they want and are proven to not care about the effects alcohol may have on their customer. Therefore, teenagers will be willing to drink any type of drinks that cause a ruckus in the society without knowing how much it can affect them. Clearly, the drinking age of twenty-one has created a safer environment in which families can grow up and healthy adolescents. who can live a long time without any problems. Drinking at a younger age can cause major brain problems in adolescents that will later affect their future. Some people think they are ready to take on this responsibility, but studies have shown that their emotions and lives cannot handle it. Overall, lowering the drinking age would be very ineffective and an unwise decision..
