Essay / Essay on The Things They Carried: Syntactic and Paratactic Style the reader absorbs the work. Writers use both paratactic style and syntactic style. These two styles contrast greatly, but in the same term, they complement each other greatly. In the book The Things They Carried, O'Brien uses both of these styles. In this essay, the syntactic and paratactic style will be examined in the story "Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong". Examples from the story will be examined and described using both writing styles. Syntactic style will receive more intense attention, however, because of how it affects the sections of the story that will be discussed. This will also show that the historical context of the story affects writing styles. Historically, women have played a subordinate role in society. This still proved true at the time this story occurred. During the war years, women began to play a greater role in society, but they were still considered less important than men. In the story of the sweetheart, the female character breaks gender roles. The soldiers make their first introduction into the story through the. They describe her as "This cute blonde - just a kid, just out of high school - she shows up with a suitcase and one of those plastic cosmetic bags. She's straight out of the crazy. I swear to God, man, she a on these white culottes and this sexy pink sweater. There she is." ("Sweetheart of Tra Bong song", 102) Without using the most...... middle of paper ......nbsp; This manner and tone would not have been used to write about other women. Because she has succeeded in a male-dominated society, she has “earned” the right to have male attention. Syntactic style plays an important role in writing. Without this, an author cannot leave the reader with anything to think about. If the writer wrote strictly using a paratactic style and let the words say exactly what the story implies, interpretation would be unnecessary. Syntactic and paratactic styles benefit the work best because they are used in conjunction with each other. In the absence of one style, the other struggles to stand on its own, and if a room tries to function that way, it becomes a very boring or confusing room. Using different styles in a single work makes it more dynamic and intriguing.
