Essay / Applications of meloxicam: a nonsteroidal drug...
INTRODUCTIONMeloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) which is a group of drugs intended to treat pain and/or inflammation. This is a prescription medication only available to people who have tenderness, swelling, and pain caused by the inflammation of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or ankylosing spondylitis. Meloxicam works by inhibiting the effect of chemicals called cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes that are used to make prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are chemicals that cause pain and inflammation, called inflammatory mediators. By inhibiting COX enzymes, fewer prostaglandins are produced, resulting in pain relief. As many conditions must be followed when prescribing a medication, this essay will address the following points based on meloxicam: • Absorption and distribution of the medication • Use of the medication during pregnancy and lactation • Use of the medication in case of Renal and Hepatic Impairment Drug Absorption and DistributionThe absorption of meloxicam by oral administration occurs from the gastrointestinal tract, resulting in a high availability of 89%. This can come in tablet, oral suspension and capsule form and will produce the same bioavailability. However, with different forms of meloxicam there will be a difference in the time taken to reach average peak plasma concentrations. After a single dose of Meloxicam in the form of oral suspension, the average maximum plasma concentration is reached within 2 hours whereas for capsules and tablets it takes approximately 5 to 6 hours. This is more effective when taking a single oral dose of 30 mg compared to a 30 mg IV bolus injection. Dose-proportional pharmacokinetics have been demonstrated in the range of 5 mg to 60 mg during a single intravenous dose...... middle of article...... ductus arteriosus: a review.
