Essay / Wycliffe and the English Bible - 1254
In a survey of 2,000 Americans, 84% own more than one Bible, the average person has 4 copies of the English Bible in their home. 37 percent read the Bible every day, 22 percent read it 3 to 5 times a week, 22 percent read it 1 to 2 times a week, 11 percent read it 2 to 3 times a month and 8 percent read it only read once a month. (Survey). If people knew the pain, loss, and fear that early humans had to endure to translate the Bible into English, perhaps they would read and care for the Bible better. Without the English translation of the Bible, people would not know God's truth for themselves. In 1324, John Wycliffe was born at Ipreswel, near Yorkshire. His family was of Saxon origin and long settled in Yorkshire. 1324 is the year usually given for Wycliffe's birth. Wycliffe probably received his early education near his home. It is not known when he first visited Oxford, with which he was so closely associated until the end of his (English) life. At Oxford, Wycliffe was known as an English theologian, philosopher, church reformer, and promoter of the first translation of the Bible into English (Wycliffe). He was only able to obtain his doctorate in theologian in 1372 due to periodic outbreaks of the Black Death (Wycliffe). He is the most recognized theologian in all of Europe. Oxford was later blamed for Wycliffe's actions (History). In 1374 he finally received the crown of the rectory of Lutherworth, with which his name is forever linked. He lived there continuously after his expulsion from Oxford in 1382, wrote his later works there, and gathered his friends and missionaries (Trevelyan, 170). Throughout his life, five papal edicts were issued for his arrest. As England moved away from the paper medium, the version was completed by his followers in 1388. After Wycliffe translated the Bible into English, it took ten months to handwrite each copy (Wycliffe).John Wycliffe devoted his entire life to translating the Bible into English so that people could read it for themselves. He knew that people should be able to find the truth for themselves. Before the English Bible, all people had to rely on Church officials, and Church officials distorted the truth for their own benefit. Now people could call Church leaders and share the real truth with others. People benefit from the Bible today. Most people have probably never learned or thought about what was done so that we could have the Bible today. If people knew the story of Wycliffe and his disciples, they would probably read their Bibles more and take better care of them. I know I will..
