Essay / Self-management of leisure behaviors in the workplace...
The following four articles were selected for annotation due to their relevance, accuracy, and quality. The topic studied was self-management of leisure behavior in the workplace and its impact on productivity in the workplace. This study examined the positive effects of leisure Internet browsing in the workplace on productivity levels. The study argues that surfing the Internet provides a discreet interruption to restore mental abilities in the workplace while promoting a sense of autonomy. Cocker (2011) used three validated case studies examining the effects of interruptions and breaks on task performance to conduct the study. The main conclusion of the study was that, provided that Internet browsing time does not exceed approximately 12 percent of working time and that periods of recreational use are short, they would have a more positive effect on productivity than longer sessions. The findings complement applications of self-determination theory (SDT) in organizational contexts, which aligns well with other ongoing research for the literature review (see Deci & Ryan, 2000). This supports the idea that browsing the Internet during short breaks had a positive correlation between workplace autonomy and connectivity while improving skills. Other research suggested by this study included research on the negative impact on task performance, where it can impinge on an individual's concentration when working on a task requiring a large amount of cognitive resources. The self-determination theory (SDT) presented in this study has been used in many reliable journals since its creation. In their original study, Deci and colleagues (1989) made a critical connection between self-determination...... middle of article ......management strategies that make workers feel more empowered control and autonomy at work will develop better self-management and, therefore, maintain higher levels of productivity.
