The Oxford Dictionary defines semiotics as “the study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation.” But according to Charles Sanders Peirce, it is divided into three categories. It is the study of how signs can be created, interpreted and modified in such a way that meaning arises. Like the other two examples given (social constructionism and linguistic relativity), semiotics examines the creation and use of language, the users of language, and how language represents or relates to the world as a whole. Both sides use rhetoric to support their cause by linking guns to patriotism, using sensational reporting, using scare tactics, and more.
