“Everyone is a moon and has a dark side that they show to no one” – Mark TwainHave you always dreamed of going on an adventure to a remote place where are you free to do so? whatever you want? In this limited area, there is so much to explore. However, there may be some mystery behind what appears to be freedom. Will you feel safe to continue doing what you want or will you change and reveal a part of humanity that is only controlled by the environment and society? Spending time alone for a long time may sound good, but sometimes being surrounded by nothing but water and a few people can also take its toll. William Golding's Lord of the Flies addresses many of these questions. The novel takes place during World War II on a desert island called Coral Island. A group of British boys are on a plane that crashes because they were hit by a missile. In the absence of adults, boys must assume the role of adults. The boys are responsible and try to strategize to find ways to be saved from Coral Island. However, due to the influences of society and war, not everyone is cooperative. Some are distracted by how quickly their surroundings have changed, as if they are wondering around the island all day. Other boys were more focused and determined to take on an adventure like finding pigs. The rest were smaller boys who had no idea what they were going to do and followed orders from some older boys. What each boy does leads to conflict. These problems continue through the actions they inflict on each other, revealing many elements of human nature. Despite the absence of adults, society plays a role in how boys treat and interact with each other. When the boys are alone on the island, they incorporate what the adults logically...... middle of paper ...... who found themselves understanding the weariness of this life where every path was an improvisation and was part of his own life. waking life” (Epstein 68). Throughout the book, the boys constantly show readers the underlying meaning of human nature through their actions and behavior. Because the altar boys support Jack to be the leader of the hunters, this gives him more courage to kill and become wilder. “Jack's soul is typhoonic, that is to say violent like a hurricane. He has a burning desire to be a leader, which drives him to lead his own society and wage war against Ralph's,” says John F. Fitzgerald in Golding Lord of the Flies: Pride as Original Sin. Golding shows readers through Jack that sometimes followers of a group also influenced by society can change or reinforce a negative aspect of human nature which in this case is cruelty and savagery..
