  • Essay / Classroom observation and school placement - 1431

IntroductionAs part of the module's practical teaching programme, I helped with the homework club at an inner-city primary school, for one hour per week during last twelve weeks. Overall, I think it was a very interesting and very beneficial experience in terms of my learning as a teacher. I have had a number of valuable experiences and here are two of the most important in my opinion.Reflection 1: Critical Impact of Learning 1On one of my first days of internship, I learned the importance for teachers to have good questioning skills. I was helping one afternoon when a young child pulled out a classmate's chair as he was about to sit down and the student fell to the floor. It was quite a dramatic incident and I was very impressed with the way the teacher used the questions to deal with the perpetrator and make him think about his actions and see the error of his ways using leading questions without get angry and without yelling at the child. The teacher's conversation with the student, whom we will call John for confidentiality reasons, went something like this. Teacher: “John, do you see anything wrong in what you just did to Paddy?” John: “Yes” Teacher: “Do you think this is an appropriate way to behave in class?” » John: “No” Teacher: “Why, what is dangerous about what you did? » John: “Because Paddy could have hurt himself” ...... middle of paper ...... information at the library or online. These are all skills that a teacher uses every day and will be fundamental to my teaching in the future.Bibliography:Cooper, J (1994). Teaching skills in the classroom. 5th ed.
