  • Essay / Major Themes of “The Tempest” - 854

In William Shakespeare's play “The Tempest”, the main theme of these plays is good versus evil. There are good characters, who do good, help others and do their best to stay out of trouble and there are other characters who are the exact opposite. All the characters do is try to get revenge on those who wronged them, hoping that the havoc would solve the problem. Good and Evil, just like the theme of the book, also applies to the world we live in today because there are good people and bad people. Good will do good while bad will be bad. There are truly good people, and so is character. Miranda is one of the characters in this book, sweet, empathetic and kind. She feels sorry for the sailors who say, “Oh, I suffered with those I saw suffering (Mowat and Werstine, 13). She sees how the people on the ship struggle to stay alive on the ship despite the storm her father Prospero threw at them and she truly feels for them. She knows that the boat could easily overturn or fill with water and that the people on board could be thrown into the water and drown. Gonzalo is the exact opposite of Antonio who only wants good for others and for the island. He has no ill intentions towards anything or the island. As Hallett Smith says in Interpretations of the Twelve Century, "Gonzalo expected the island to produce everything necessary for an innocent existence, without sweat or effort, but apparently fires are needed and lots of wood must be transported” (7). He wants the island to grow and prosper, he wants the fruits to grow and produce fruit. He doesn't want people to suffer for anything. He just wants things to be normal and people to not have to worry about anything. He's a parent... middle of paper... the things he does are so unhuman-like, which makes him evil. Another example of Caliban being evil is the fact that he attempted to rape Prospero's daughter Miranda, as stated by Barbara Fuchs in her article Conquering Islands: Contextualizing the Tempest where it is written: "Caliban's Attack against Prospero’s daughter once again sexualizes colonizing impulses” (61). ). This suggests rape and it's not inhumane and it shows that Miranda is not the first woman this has happened to. It's not good, it's evil. Caliban's character in this book is horrible in the things he does, he starts off as an evil monster born to evil parents and he causes trouble everywhere he goes. As a servant he commits evil deeds and by himself he is evil. Finally, Antonio is another character in this book who is a manipulator and will do anything to get what he wants..
