The reason teachers say this is so you can pay attention and have minimal questions, because you were listening, not just hearing the teacher. When you give someone your attention, you show that you are listening and it definitely gets noticed. It's also important to be a good listener when you're at work and at home. When you're at work and your boss tells you to do something, he expects you to do it. Therefore, you must listen to your boss and interpret what is asked of him.
