Essay / Free Essay on The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne...
Analysis of Sins in The Scarlet LetterThe story begins with an unhappy marriage between Hester and Roger Prynne, which leads to adultery and revenge. The Scarlet Letter is the title of Nathaniel Hawthorne's book. The book focuses primarily on Hester Prynne, her sin, and the people who found themselves caught in the middle of it. The first and most important is Hester Prynne. As stated before, she was the main character and the one who leads others to sin. She committed the sin of adultery, the sin which in those days was punishable by death. The only reason they took her life was because she didn't want to name the baby's father, and her baby "elf child" couldn't live alone without a mother or father. Therefore, in order to continue exercising their authority, the judiciary decided to punish her by making her wear the scarlet letter "A" on her chest and making her stand on the scaffold for three hours every day. "But in their great mercy and tenderness of heart, they condemned Mistress Prynne to remain only three hours on the platform of the pillory, and then, for the remainder of her natural life, to bear upon her a mark of shame. ". (P.42)On the other hand, we find the Reverend Arthur Dimsdale, who was the father of the baby. It seems that he could not resist the temptations of the flesh, even though he was a minister, he still fell into sin and adultery. Unlike Hester, Dimsdale did not have to pay any consequences when it came to the outside world, because Hester did not tell anyone that he was the baby's father. Despite this, he still received his punishment, an internal punishment. “A well-hidden secret, pure as new fallen snow, while their hearts are stained with iniquities which they cannot shake off” (p. 88) Finally, the last sinner was Roger Chilingworth, or Roger Prynne. Although he did not commit a sin deserving death at that time, his sin was worse than any other. Not only did he destroy Reverend Dimsdale's life, torturing him with his analogies and indirect stories. He also destroyed his own life by making himself the thing he hated most, a demon. "I already told you what I am, a demon!".
