Persepolis and the Women Will Keep the House For my fiction research, I chose to do Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi, to study the differences in gender roles as well as politics government. The main objective of this fiction is to better understand how Satrapi's writing style reflects the inequalities that emerged during the Islamic Revolution through graphic storytelling. Contrary to my ethnography, Women will keep the household of Esara Pilapa; The main objective of her study is to understand the transition of Thai women from migrant daughters to migrant heads of households and how marital tensions arise from changes in gender roles. While both fiction and ethnography focus on two different countries, they both explore inequalities in gender roles. However, while Persepolis illustrates through imagery Satrapi's protest against gender roles and cultural inequalities under the Islamic Revolution, Women Shall Keep the Home demonstrates through interviews how the transition to marriage impacts decision-making and gender positions.1. PersepolisThe markers of cultural difference that I analyzed in the book Persepolis are gender roles and government policy. Persepolis is a story about Marjane Satrapi, a young girl who grew up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution of 1979. During this period, many cultural and social inequalities took place. Satrapi tells the story of her life in Tehran from six to ten years during the conquest of the Shah's regime. “It also discusses the shocking effects that took place during the war with Iraq throughout the Islamic Revolution” (History of Iran). Persepolis conveys a unique graphic style of Satrapi's story. "In black and white, Satrapi represents its own child... middle of paper ...... and differentiates itself from other Asian countries. Overall, I thought the comparative method was a good way to look at the culture of a particular part of the world as a whole. In conclusion, Satrapi and Pilapa's works come from two totally different countries in different eras while they both communicate the subject about gender roles through distinct methods. However, these authors' fictional works and ethnographic works are similar in that they both use argumentative approaches to make a point. Nonetheless, both works focus on gender roles and how changes within a society in gender positions continue to be an important part of the country's culture. Nonetheless, Satrapi and Pilapa were able to convey the differences between gender roles through two distinct methods, allowing an entire audience to understand these cultures and why they behave in certain ways..
