  • Essay / Technological development: boon or bane for society?

Once again, our cell phones win. When you have Siri or Google Maps, why waste your money on a real map, right? It's simply wasted valuable time and money when all you had to do was enter an address and leave. As I mentioned before, this is obviously very convenient; However, how are we going to understand how to read a map in an emergency if we have never looked at one before. In this sense, we no longer need to work as hard to achieve the same results. Sure, that might be a good thing, but it also limits our physical and mental capabilities and narrows our knowledge base. Additionally, going back to one of the previous arguments, it limits the chances of building connections and having real face-to-face interaction. If you think about it, when you use a map to orient yourself on a road trip, you are not holding it in your hand and reading it yourself if you are the driver. The driver depends on the “passenger seat driver” to point him in the right direction. It also helps develop strong teamwork skills that realistically cannot be obtained from using a GPS.
