Liberal democracy is a form of democracy in which a representative government operates according to the principles of liberalism. This means that the rights of minorities, and in particular of the individual, are protected. It is characterized by fair, free and competitive elections between several political parties. It is also characterized by a separation of powers between the different branches of government, by the rule of law in daily life as part of an open society and by equal protection of human rights, civil rights, civil liberties and political freedoms of all people. Individuals have the capacity to make moral decisions themselves, without being interfered with (individual sovereignty).
