Essay / Being a Nurse Practitioner - 1045
Every little child has big exceptions to what they want to be when they grow up. Some people dream of becoming President of the United States of America, or becoming an astronaut, many little children say they want to become a doctor. What children don't understand is that there are many types of doctors, such as an orthopedic surgeon, who works with the feet, or an oral surgeon, who works with the mouth. Another similarity to a doctor is that of a nurse practitioner. They perform many of the same tasks, such as performing minor flare-ups, repairing broken bones, or simply performing a routine check-up. Becoming a nurse practitioner requires many years of schooling, good grades, lots of time, dedication and money. Many nurse practitioners specialize in different areas. One could specialize to become a geriatric nurse practitioner. A geriatric nurse will design workout programs for recovering patients and may also act as an advisor to elderly patients. Another field that someone could go into would be becoming an oncology nurse practitioner. An oncology nurse typically works with cancer patients. They perform examinations and record the patient's process. Psychiatric nurse practitioner is a popular field in which a nurse could enter. Psychiatric nurse practitioners tend to have a higher level of education, such as a doctorate. They act as a therapist for troubled patients and can also prescribe appropriate medications. Psychiatric nurse practitioners act more like a counselor to patients who need to talk to someone than like a doctor. A pediatric nurse practitioner is also another popular field one could get into.
