Essay / Arabian Nights - 773
On the night of Saturday, April 13, 2014, I went to Arabian Night at Sheik Hookah Bar in downtown Norman, Oklahoma. This was one of several places between Oklahoma City and Norman to see a belly dancing show. I chose Sheik Hookah Bar because it was the most convenient of all the places. The ball I attended was called “A Thousand and One Nights.” The dancers use their movement and body language to communicate the movements used by Middle Eastern dancers. The atmosphere in Sheik was dark and relatively calm. There were dim lights and a relaxed environment. Upon entering the bar I chose my hookah flavor and also had the option to purchase a drink for the show. I came with two of my good friends, who had also never attended an oriental dance show. This dance was unlike any other I had ever witnessed. Subsequently, this experience gave me a new perspective on the types of dances in the world. The belly dancers started the show with rather slow movements, beating to the rhythm of a drum. They started with body rolls and fluid arm movements. They then began using their hips, which seemed to be the main area of focus throughout the performance. Every movement started or included a movement of the hips, and everything was very fluid. The dancers started doing a few tricks, then formed various formations. The dance moves started to increase rapidly throughout the show and really started to pick up pace in the middle of the show. The dancers were all in sync with their movements, which seemed difficult due to the unstable rhythms. Throughout, there were numerous full-body rolls, which caught the audience's attention because, as if there was a central element...... middle of paper... total impression of the how fast they could shake their hips, move their stomachs, and how much their bodies were able to bend. Overall, this dance experience was one that I would highly recommend to other students participating in this class. . It was unlike any other live performance I have experienced live. I would like to see more Arab shows, in the hope of continuing to amaze me. Seeing this show live compared to watching line dances was the full effect and experience of watching it live. Requiring students to watch a live performance really shows us as students the hard work the dancers put in, the time and effort they put into the performance, and it all comes together. The lights, music and dancing seemed much nicer. It's a gift that I got to see this show right here in Norman, Oklahoma and it's an experience I will never forget..
