Essay / The Sheet Metal Forming Process - 3061
Introduction: Sheet metal forming is a process of transforming a flat sheet of metal into a part of a desired shape without excessive localized thinning or fracture. This next sheet metal forming report consists of a forming study. Composed of two parts, one given during the course and the other outside our field of work, it details the materials used and their metallurgical properties and the alternative materials that can be considered. Detail the forming process used and an alternative route. Also detail forming effects such as springback and methods to reduce them. Mechanical properties of metals: Formability is the ease with which sheet metal can be shaped by plastic deformation. Parts, in service and during forming, are subjected to forces. Knowledge of the material characteristics is necessary to design and form the component so that any resulting deformation does not lead to failure of the component in service and during forming. These material characteristics can be determined by stress and strain tests using a test sample. , one of the most common is the tensile test, which measures two types of mechanical properties 1. Strength properties: yield strength, elastic modulus, ultimate tensile strength. 2. Ductile properties: percentage elongation. The deformation of a material or strains depends on the magnitude of the stress. For most metals subjected to tensile stress, stress and strain are proportional. The deformation in which the stress is proportional to the stain is called elastic deformation. A plot of stress versus strain gives a linear relationship. The slope of this linear segment represents the modulus of elasticity E. This modulus indicates the stiffness of the material or the resistance of the material to the elements...... middle of paper ......&sons, Inc. seventh edition 2007 .
