Essay / The contribution of social determinants of health to M....
“The health of individuals and populations is influenced and determined by numerous factors acting in various combinations. Health, illness, disability and ultimately death are seen as the result of…human biology, lifestyle and environmental (e.g. social) factors…” (Mary Louise Fleming, 2009) There are many unchanging contributing factors that play a role in a person's health status. their health status, this can range from the gender and place in which they were born, to genetic deficiencies and the lifestyle in which their parents raised them or even government policies; but for as many immutable factors, there are also changing factors. In Mr. A's case, he was born of Pacific Islander descent. It can therefore be assumed that he was born into an obese family with little money and was raised in poorer living conditions than the average Australian. For this reason, their health is expected to be worse than that of the average Australian, due to their social determinants. He is now an adult man with a family, but he still lives in problematic conditions due to his upbringing and culture as well as the minimal, if any, level of prevention. There are many risk factors that have affected Mr. A's health due to the social determinants he faced such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, etc. There are also upstream and downstream factors that affect one's health, "although upstream and downstream, intermediate determinants influence the type, likelihood, number and severity of diseases that affect a person, inequalities in downstream come into play when a person becomes ill. (AMA, 2007). These factors played a major role in the outcome of his heart attack. Finally, its displayed level of prevention is a key aspect of its impact on health and the prevention of health inequalities.
