As the influx of new technologies continues this century, so does the potential damage to a computer user's personal information and unauthorized access increase with it. Nowadays, some criminals can now commit crimes from the comfort of their homes, particularly through the use of their computers. Two types of crimes are occurring at an exponential rate: computer crimes and cybercrimes. Computer crimes are “illegal acts involving a computer” and cybercrime refers to “illegal acts online or on the Internet” (Shelly and Vemaat 382), both committed by individuals with advanced computer skills and known as of computer hackers. These hackers have varied objectives ranging from personal gain of assets (or gain ordered from a third party), to spying on others or simply to challenge. Computer users are concerned about their bank account information, social security numbers, social media accounts and personal information, but a new security breach that many of us should be concerned about is the possibility that our webcams are hacked, also known as camfecting or camjacking. . Camfecting is “the fraudulent process of hacking into a person's webcam and activating it without the permission of the webcam owner. The remotely activated webcam can then be used to watch anything within the webcam's field of view” (Anticamfecting Co). Many cases of camfecting affect individuals, whether they are directly targeted and sought after or are part of a mass camjacking. Victims of camfecting include Miss Teen USA 2013, "1.8 million Yahoo users" worldwide (Osborne and Whittaker), and maybe even myself.
