  • Essay / Personal Story: Personal Experience: Expectations...

Wearing that fancy collared uniform every day to school meant I needed to get good grades. The rigorous and fast-paced courses proved to be quite a challenge. But nevertheless, I mastered all my lessons. The weight on my back increased with peer pressure to join and succeed in sports. I participated in a multitude of physical activities, including football, basketball, and baseball. I definitely didn't "learn my character" from playing sports, but I did learn how horrible I was at it. After joining these sports, I felt like I was always failing and letting my teammates down. After one of my basketball seasons, my team voted for people to receive awards. When I won an award, I was more confused than when I was in my algebra class. This award was only given to the most supportive player on the team. At that moment, my mind did some more gymnastics. It didn't matter if I scored points or did well on the field, what really mattered was making the team. Being a bench warmer wasn't such a bad job. I loved cheering up people who missed a shot or celebrating with those who made it. These are the moments that put me on cloud nine, the real, authentic interactions with my teammates. As long as I worked hard, my grades weren't a matter of life and death. I just needed to stop worrying and start living. Sadly, This Basketball Team's Incredible Coach Passed Away From Cancer.
