  • Essay / Writing Commentary - 873

For my argumentative writing piece, my goal was to inform how higher education tuition was causing many problems and that it should be free. Before doing all this, I first thought about the audience. I thought this issue should be made known to everyone. It's quite vague because there is no specific target audience. So, I focus on educated people and those who want to pursue higher education in our society, as this topic is mainly of interest to them. I wanted to write in the style of an editorial diary, expressing all my opinions on this subject. Therefore, I used as many facts and statistics as possible to make my article compelling and engaging for the reader rather than just presenting all my opinions which they are disinterested in. One of the key elements that I mainly considered in my article was tone. The aim of my article being to inform, I thought that a serious tone would be attractive. This also appeals to my audience because they can clearly understand this type of tone. Another key element that I also considered in my article is the language and how it would attract my audience. Throughout my article, I decided to write formally. I used expressions like “it’s” rather than “it’s” to make it seem formal. I did this because my audience was more likely to be educated people, such as professors or people willing to pursue higher education. Therefore, communicating in a formal way would be appropriate for them to read. Complex sentences are more likely to be prevalent in formal writing. They provide a lot of detail. However, too many long sentences would easily lose the reader's interest and fail to engage them while short sentences are more punchy and quick, but they are not very detailed. T...... middle of paper ......sed was emotive language. This helped me explain my arguments. However, I didn't use them excessively. I thought this technique would keep the reader interested because it would allow them to have an immediate emotional reaction, which influences their thoughts. I also presented my writing by presenting many points supported by one point of view because this would obviously strengthen my argument. However, I showed some points that went against my point of view. When I presented the opposing view in my article, I intended to write with less detail. Indeed, if this were detailed it would only weaken my argument. Therefore, to ensure that my argument is always stronger than the opposing view, I counter-argue the opposing views in the following paragraph using mostly surprising facts and statistics to show the reader how the ideas from the opposite point of view are false and absurd..
