Accounting is the process of identifying, recording, and communicating the economic events of an organization to interested users in order to make sound decisions. In accounting, the identification of economic events involves the selection of economic activities related to a particular organization, such as the payment of salaries to employees of a particular entity. In turn, once these economic activities are identified, they are recorded on the books daily in a systematic system measured in dollars. These economic events are then classified and synthesized by an accounting system. Data collected during economic events is then translated into financial statements and communicated to internal and external users interested in the economic health of the company. Accounting is a very broad field with endless opportunities in the business world. However, accounting is divided into three main areas, namely public accounting, private accounting, and nonprofit accounting. In public accounting, expert services are provided to the public by a certified public accountant (CPA) in the same way that an attorney serves clients. Auditing plays a major role in public accounting; they examine the reliability of the financial statements of the entities and express an informed opinion. Taxation is another essential element of public accounting. Tax professionals are responsible for planning and preparing tax returns as well as following IRS guidelines and regulations in representing their clients.
