Essay / Using Critical Thinking in Education - 949
Many different meanings come to mind when I hear the words critical thinking. “No single definition of critical thinking is widely accepted,” Jane S. Halonen wrote in a scholarly article. When teachers are asked what their meaning is in relation to critical thinking, they have many different answers. “As teachers, we often assume that we know what critical thinking means. » A quote from Jane S. Halonen in the article Demystifying Critical Thinking. McPeck (1981) also suggested that the term “critical thinking” is paradoxically both “overworked and under-analyzed.” I somewhat agree with these quotes, but as a teacher myself in an autistic classroom or any other classroom; we use a lot of thinking which can often be critical. In our class of autistic students, I am the assistant to a teacher and two other assistants who teach in the same room. Our autistic children have many analytical and thinking skills to accomplish the many tasks of educating their minds. We use critical thinking in the documentation we produce, in planning activities and schedules, and in establishing good professional relationships with our students and colleagues. As with any student in the classroom, a teacher must ensure that they keep documentation of the many details. of what is happening, but with our autistic students it is mandatory that we write down every detail in books. We have some students and we need to use this documentation to protect ourselves from being accused of things we don't do. It has sometimes happened to us that a parent accuses us of having caused bruises on a child's actions by using the restraint, and we have repeatedly said that we were not using the restraint and that these bruises were already there. So now we document every small or large bruise we see at different times of the day. It takes a lot of critical thinking to formulate details correctly when the child is performing a simple task like going to the toilet. Often we have to use prompts, reinforcements or lift him to get him to the toilet, and we have to note all his actions. Sometimes he hits himself or us several times, and this too must be documented. We document all of our students, but some students require significantly more documentation. Planning activities and schedules requires a lot of critical thinking in the classroom..
