  • Essay / The influence of the Medici on art - 1207

In the modern market there are not many products that could be worth more than masterpieces of art, millions and millions dollars circulate every day in the art buying and selling market. If the artist's name is right, the works can bring in sums that amaze us. To understand this strange and scandalous affair between art and money, we have to go back at least 600 years. There was a far more shocking collision between market forces and masterpieces in Renaissance Florence. Almost all of the most splendid and exquisite arts were created in the service of the wealthy and ruthless Medici family. This painting transformed the Medici's image as a moneylender, seemingly serving as a visual metaphor or alter ego for Cosimo and the rest of his family. The Magi sent gifts to Jesus, what is this monastery if not a splendid gift from the Medici to Jesus Christ? The excitement of making money seeped into every aspect of Renaissance life. The artists were inspired by the mathematics of banking and accounting to create a new pictorial language. Mathematics, the tools of primitive capitalism, the principles that had made the Medici rich, had infiltrated the very texture of art. It's no surprise that artists can manipulate mathematics to create new skills such as 3D perspective illusions. The Medici sponsored artists like Paolo Uccello, who obsessively attempted to create his illusion of space in his work..
