In this article, I explore whether there should be a rule prohibiting the use of CEDs in education. I argue first that a rule prohibiting the use of CEDs should exist because their use thwarts the achievement of an internal good of educational practice. One of the goals of education is to learn responsibility, so responsibility is an internal good of education. Using cognitive enhancements will then prevent students from achieving this learning. I then object to the assertion that there should be a rule against taking DECs. I show that, in fact, cognitive enhancing drugs do not counteract the learning of responsibility and that the initial argument is therefore unfounded. First, I will show why there should be rules prohibiting behavior that thwarts the achievement of an internal good in any practice.
