Essay / Truman seems more like a rat in a cage than a “real man.”
Truman Burbank, as the unwitting main star of “The Truman Show,” is trapped in a world that appears on the surface normal, almost perfect. He has a loving wife, a good job, friendly neighbors, and people who stop him on the streets of Seahaven to talk to him. However, Seahaven is not the ideal place it seems. Truman is more like a rat in a cage, controlled by his “Creator” Christof. Despite the false nature of everything and everyone around him, Truman ultimately reveals himself to be a "real man." Seahaven is a deceptively perfect neighborhood, reminiscent of a quaint 1950s middle-class town. Advertisements extol the virtues of Seahaven, TV shows remind Truman of the value of living in a small town, and his best friend wonders why he would want a day leave such a wonderful place. However, there are 5,000 hidden cameras ready to capture Truman's every move. Only Sylvia sees through this clever TV packaging and realizes that Seahaven is nothing more than a cage designed to keep Truman trapped. On a television talk show, she accuses Christof of crushing Truman's humanity, shouting "look what you did to him." Posters on his wall highlight comparisons between Truman and a caged animal, showing Truman as a youth looking through the bars of a park as well as a photo of Truman as an adult with superimposed iron bars. She and the "Save Truman" group seem to be the only ones to recognize Truman's plight. Christof never views Truman as a rat locked in a cage. To him, Seahaven is the perfect town filled with everything Truman could need or want. The guards at his “Moon” studio wear t-shirts that say “Love him, protect him.” To him, Truman is not an animal to be dispatched... middle of paper ...... makes the decision to leave the safe confines of Seahaven. No longer a caged rat, he defies his captor and leaves the only world he has ever known. Truman dismisses the true reality of the television he stars in because they "never had a camera in [his] head." Despite Christof's pleas to stay, Truman must be true to himself and discover the real world beyond the borders of Seahaven. Although locked in Seahaven like a rat in a cage, Truman is able to transition into becoming a "real man." He flees an enclosure that offers him no real choice to find his true love Sylvia and live an authentic life. His naive and authentic nature emphasizes the falsity of those around him. Bidding farewell to Christof and his audience, Truman leaves his cage and proves that he is more of a man than a rat. "The Truman Show", movie.
