  • Essay / Domestic violence in New Zealand is the loss of innocence

    A few weeks ago, while visiting the Banksy exhibition at the Canterbury Museum, a particular work of art stood out to me. It depicted the silhouette of a boy and a girl holding hands and walking over a large pile of guns. After thinking about the work, I realized that this depiction of children's loss of innocence was exceptionally relevant in New Zealand and could not better reflect the growing epidemic that is dividing families and disturbing children in New Zealand: domestic violence. According to the Ministry of Social Development, around a quarter of children in New Zealand have witnessed family violence and there is no sign of these statistics improving. Furthermore, the government is trying to sweep this issue under the rug. Last year, domestic violence was removed from crime statistics, hiding the nationwide increase, with police saying it was an attempt to align with Australian methods of crime reporting. Why should we change our ways to be more like Australia? They don't have the same unacceptable levels of domestic violence...
