Essay / Hera and Aphrodite - 1931
Hera and Aphrodite. Two goddesses from both sides of the Trojan War. Both have their own personalities and agendas. The two have some similarities. Hera and Aphrodite seem to believe in the cause they are fighting for. However, they have very different ways of getting what they want. In The Iliad, these two goddesses are on opposite sides (as I said before). Hera fought alongside the Achaeans, where Aphrodite sided with the Trojans. According to Edith Hamilton, it all began when King Peleus married Thetis, a sea nymph. All the gods are present, except for Eris, who for some reason was not invited. Eris is angry and decides to start an argument during the festivities. So she sends to the banquet a golden apple with the simple inscription “For the fairest”. Of course, all the goddesses believe the apple is for them and an argument ensues. Finally, three finalists are selected from among the goddesses. One of them is Athena and the other two are Hera and Aphrodite. An impartial judge is chosen in Paris, who is the son of Priam, the king of Troy. In order to ensure that they are chosen as the most beautiful, each of the three goddesses bribes Paris to choose them. Athena offers him success in battle, Hera offers royal power (which to me doesn't make much sense, since he's already prince of Troy, unless of course she means the whole world), and Aphrodite offers him the most beautiful girl. in the world. Paris chooses Aphrodite and in turn receives Helen as a prize. It is from there that the Trojan War begins. I believe that it is thanks to this struggle that the camps are decided. Aphrodite is on the side of the Trojans, because Paris is on that side. It's...... middle of paper......inside her, she gets angry. And when Artemis tries to get him to join the fighting, once again, Hera attacks. This time she takes Artemis' bow and shoots her, then covers her ears until she submits. We once again see Hera's violent side when she doesn't get what she wants. Hera and Aphrodite, two goddesses who represent similar aspects of life, love and marriage, although two very different people. Hera has a crazy temper and will do anything for her cause and destroy anyone, whether god or mortal, who gets in her way. Aphrodite is a peaceful and very caring goddess who prefers to protect and flee rather than engage in conflict. They fight on opposite sides, they seem to be the ying and the yang. I believe that if their personalities merged, they would create a very well-rounded individual. Still, aside, I'm surprised they survived this long.
