Throughout her life, there have been three significant events in her life. One being his mother's marriage, two being Japan's war against China, and the third being the communist revolution. Bao Qin's mother's marriage to Dr. Xia sparked controversy. Dr. Xia had children and her children did not approve of Yu-Fang because she was previously a concubine. Her children felt she was neither a suitable mother nor a suitable wife. The children were so opposed to the marriage that the son hit Yu-fang. The children hadn't taken the time to get to know Yu-fang and really didn't know if she was suitable to be a wife or mother. However, they still considered that they had the right to take matters into their own hands and go so far as to hurt Yu-fang. It's hard to imagine a son beating his future mother-in-law without any concrete reason. The abuse continued to escalate. Bao Qin was also mistreated. Dr. Xia's grandchildren abused her, not only physically but also verbally. There was one case where the abuse was so severe that it broke her hip and left her walking with a limp for the rest of her life. These events were very trying for women.
