    A marriage proposalIt seems that Anton Chekhov comically shows the struggle to separate a person's wants and needs. Both Ivan and Natalia want to get married, but what they really need is an understanding between them before they can just get married. They argue over issues that are ridiculous for an engaged couple. Anton shows that wants can dominate a person's needs simply based on how the story unfolds. Ivan just visits his neighbors house to ask his neighbor if he can marry his daughter. Even though they've known each other for a while, it doesn't mean anything, as Ivan and Natalya argue over who owns Oxen Meadows as soon as they start a conversation and before he can propose to her. The argument however results in Ivan moving away from Chubukov, Natalya's father intervenes in their argument as a father would; leading Chubukov to tell Ivan to never come home again. Anton seems to show that materials shouldn't even matter in a real marriage, because true love doesn't come at all....
