Sexual content first appeared in the media in the 1980s. It was in the form of a news report on sex education (Rich, nd). Puberty is a strange stage for a teenager. During this stage of life, they go through different developments such as increased hormones, sexual desire, etc. The media can sometimes influence adolescents to become sexually active. They are more likely to be made to accept sexual acts as normal during the puberty stage. Depending on the age and growth phase that adolescents go through, their cognitive abilities allow them to decisively explore the hidden messages of the media. Studies show that adolescent sexuality is linked to the media; however, affiliation is not apparent (Grube & Gruber, 2000). It seems like everything we watch these days involves some form of sexual innuendo, ranging from a lingering touch to full disclosure. With entertainment like Teen Mom, The Kardashians, The Real Housewives of Atlanta, America's Next Top model etc. games like The Sims, Suburbia, God of War: Ascension, Farcry etc. Magazines/books like The Fifty Shades of Grey, Harlequin Novels, Playboy, Maxim, Cosmopolitan etc. the media is full of sexual content even if it is not intentional. Although media has been associated with its power over behaviors and attitudes, few studies have examined the effects of media on adolescents' sexual behaviors and attitudes (Eitel, et al., 2005). Studies have been conducted on the exposure of sexual content among adolescents. young children and adolescents aged six to 16. A study showed that children aged six to 11 were fascinated and watched television with a sexual substance.
