Essay / Racial Tensions Exposed in “Dear White People”
Giving uneducated young adults a chance to be black, tough, wild and drunk all at once was a risk they were willing to take. After Monday night's party, unfortunately, the madness wasn't over. In UCSD's Geisel Library on Thursday, a noose was found in plain view. This was a form of hateful joke by an unknown UCSD student, who has yet to be arrested. This was the final straw for most black and brown students at UCSD. Depending on which students you ask, they will say that justice was not served. According to Julianne Hing, "Students are angry because while university administrators like Chancellor Mary Anne Fox were quick to act in support of black students on campus, they also distanced themselves from the Compton Cookout incident." . Campus administration initially mentioned that because the Compton Cookout was officially an off-campus event, no further action would be taken against the perpetrators. Some students believe the administration reacted quickly when they heard about these actions, but still have not come to their defense. Since the incident, no serious action has been taken as no one has been suspended. The fraternities organizing the party were questioned, but everyone denies everything.
