The other girls seemed tall and experienced, which increased my anxiety. Looking for advice, I contacted the assistant coach before tryouts began and she graciously provided me with some tips on proper body position for successful volleyball success. At the start of tryouts, the head coach placed the players into groups based on their height. I found myself in the group of taller players, a group assigned to blocking and spiking. While many girls were good at doping, I was unfamiliar with this technique. Luckily, the coach taught me the correct approach, which involved a left foot, right foot, and left foot sequence. I quickly acquired the skill. The next phase of testing focused on blocking, where the coach assessed our ability to jump over the net. Given my previous experience in basketball, I excelled in that aspect. The coach, impressed by my jumping abilities, used me as an example for the other players. We were all tested on passing, aiming to return the ball directly into the coach's hands. Although some players struggled, I managed to pass consistently with accuracy. The final test consisted of serving the ball across the court and over the net. The coach allows underhand serve for beginners like us. As each group took their turn, most failed to clear the net. Remarkably, everyone in my group, including me, managed to serve the ball over the net. By the end of tryouts, I had mastered the four fundamental skills of volleyball and earned a spot on the middle school volleyball team. Following my selection, the coach required that each member of the team read the “Official Rules of Volleyball”. We studied the rulebook meticulously and engaged in discussions during training sessions. The book mainly described the do's and don'ts of volleyball. After learning a rule, our coach expected us to demonstrate our understanding. One of the first rules we understood was the limitation of six players on the volleyball court at any given time. We have trained ourselves to position ourselves accordingly. Another fundamental rule involved walking on the service line during serve, which would allow the opposing team to win a point and the serve. Our coach often challenged us to serve ten.
