The definition of media is “the principal means of mass communication”. This mass communication generally occurs through television, radio, newspapers and the Internet. The media has also had an impact on society through its communication. This has both a social effect and a political effect on society. Media can have many positive effects; such as increasing the dissemination of information, while the media can also have negative effects, such as influencing public opinion or misleading the public into believing statements or arguments. The media has also had many other purposes, such as providing emergency aid or carrying out illegal scams against people on the Internet or any other media device commonly used today. An example of this is the United States' portrayal of Iranians. The media repeatedly presented them as uncivilized terrorists. Another example of propaganda is during World War II. Posters depicting Japanese soldiers presented them as evil and immoral soldiers. Posters like these had “confirmed” civilian suspicions about enemy soldiers. Propaganda posters like these gained supporters for a war cause by “demonizing” the enemy. Propaganda has been used in major wars and battles. Specifically, Alexander the Great was the first to use propaganda in war.
