    Although their origins may stem from a fascination with exotic animals, over the years zoos have constantly evolved and improved beyond their early predecessors; however, it has always involved the process of scientific research. Today's modern zoo does not exist simply for entertainment, although many visitors may initially visit in the spirit of entertainment, most leave with a better knowledge of wildlife and the current issues they face in our environment. Zoos serve as ambassadors for wildlife through ongoing protection, rehabilitation and conservation efforts. Animal rights activists and organizations have harbored negative opinions toward zoos for a variety of reasons. They believe that the educational value that a zoo provides to its visitors does not sufficiently compensate for the captivity of wild animals. They propose that funds from financial gains are not used properly for animal welfare.
