Nature of the jobBeing a museum curator involves time, dedication and good management skills. A museum curator is responsible for objects in a museum that are owned by the museum or are on loan. They decide when an item is sold/lent, traded or purchased. In addition to managing objects and exhibits, curators are also responsible for planning public outreach events and programs, such as lectures or museum tours. They are also responsible for organizing workshops and classes, finding and hiring interpreters or translators, collecting and tracking important documents, writing articles for websites or newspapers, managing and plan the budget, train new staff members and many other miscellaneous tasks depending on the museum. The work is very disciplined and structured.Why I chose this careerI feel like the museum curator position is the right one for me because it emphasizes overall organizational skills and a strong sense of responsibility. I have the ability to be persuasive and willing to compromise. I like the idea of doing this job because it is exciting and offers new challenges every day. When working as a curator, one has the opportunity to get up close and personal with historical documents, objects, and works of art. Visitors and other workers simply do not have the ability or privilege to do so. Working Conditions A curator must be able to negotiate and be willing to compromise, as it is often their responsibility to borrow from museums or other places.
