Essay / A Brief Overview of Humane Society - 746
Humane SocietyHumane Society is a non-profit organization, which is a corporation or association that carries out activities for the benefit of the general public, without shareholders and without profit. The humane society is also a US non-profit, tax-exempt 501c organization. It was founded in 1954 by Fred Myers (1904-1963), its first name was the National Humane Society, later named The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Their first mission was to reduce the suffering of livestock during slaughter. The Humane Slaughter Act, passed in 1958, would change the lives of millions of animals across America. The Humane Society began investigating animal testing in the 1950s to gather evidence of animal neglect or suffering. Myers said: “Every humane society should be actively concerned about the treatment of such large numbers of animals. » In 1961, the HSUS investigated dog dealers in the United States to gain support for a law that would prevent animal cruelty in laboratories. The investigation lasted 5 years, then in February 1966, Life magazine published an essay on dog dealers and thousands of Americans wrote to their representatives in Congress demanding action to protect animals and end the pet theft. Later that year, the Animal Welfare Act of 1966 was passed, the second major federal humanitarian law passed since World War II. Other goals they had during this time were: reducing homeless dogs and cats, reforming inhumane euthanasia practices, removing abuse by pet stores and pet breeders, and helping wildlife and marine life. The head of the humane society organization is the board of directors, which has approximately 15 members, all volunteers. Then there is the board of directors... middle of paper ... the highest paid employee is the director, paid between $62 and $67,000 per year.BIBLIOGRAPHYhttp://www.glassdoor.com/ Salary/The -Humane-Society-Salaries-E7799.htmhttp://www.humanesociety.orghttp://www.seattlehumane.org/donate/plannedgivinghttp://www.animalsheltering.org/jobs/jobs-search-results- date.htmlhttp http://www.californiastatehumane.org/humane_officers.htmhttp://www.humanesociety.org/assets/maps/volunteer/volunteer_list.html?state=CA&state=National#.UrPcuqU0jwIhttp://www.ivhsspca. org/index. php/aboutus/serviceshttps://theanimalrescuesite.greatergood.com/store/ars/category/3071/the-humane-society-of-the-united-states-store?origin=HSUSMainhttp://www.myphilanthropedia.org/ top-nonprofits/national/animal-welfare-rights-protection/2011/hsus-humane-society-of-the-united-states http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Humane_Society_of_the_United_States
