    Unfortunately, due to the immense number of immigrants, housing was constantly divided into smaller dwellings. The rapidly industrializing city was unable to meet the demand for housing. Families would be crowded into poorly lit spaces and would also lack plumbing and ventilation. These areas were called tenements. Naturally, these poor living conditions led to altercations and unrest. Because of this, immigrants were seen as bringing crime, vice, and immorality to America.2 One could say that this changed American culture. To agree or disagree, we must define what culture is.
