The media influences the way people experience social life. Media such as newspapers, television and cinema are important sources of information, education and entertainment. It can be used to learn more about the world and its people. In this regard, it can be said that the media represent, interpret and endorse certain aspects of social experience (O'Shaughnessy and Stadler, 2005). The media is also involved in social regulation, or in other words, in the government of society. The media is obviously involved in government and politics because modern democratic systems are run through the media. But the media has a more important role to play in government by structuring how society is controlled and maintained. Furthermore, even though the media is owned and operated by government, commercial and community interests dominate. In this regard, there is reason to affirm that the media serve the interests of those who own them. Adorno and Horkheimer have argued that mass media in particular function as a “culture industry” (Van Krieken et al, 2006: 441). It provides ideological products for mass consumption that preserve and expand the dominant position of the ruling classes. There is also an argument that corporate monopolization of media ownership and modes of production means that media has become the instrument of private capital and mediated colonization. It also influences our personal life, for example how we present ourselves in society in terms of image and personally. In terms of globalization, globalization is fueled by cultural industries and capitalism in which for-profit media companies operate on the world stage. This raises concerns because it could lead to high-profile colonization, but it has some advantages.
