  • Essay / First Person Shooter Games Essay - 2664

Contrary to popular belief, simply playing first person shooter video games does not have a direct effect on the audience, but other factors such as duration and environment greatly determine the effect. There are many studies that focus on the positive or negative effects of first-person shooter games, but do not examine deeper causes or factors. An example would be a study that would conduct an experiment on how first-person shooter games increase aggressive mental states by requiring participants to play long hours in a rigorous manner and then analyzing their mental states. This experiment is flawed because it only tested long hours of gameplay and tied the result to first-person shooter gameplay in general. Under certain conditions, studies have shown that first-person shooter games have negative effects. However, there is widespread misunderstanding because studies have not accurately shown the cause. I became interested in this research topic because of my own experience with periodic play. I have read various articles that contradict each other. Some would argue that these games make children incredibly aggressive and should not be part of a healthy lifestyle. While other articles claim positive effects such as improved motor skills or improved spatial skills. I was interested because these articles tended to say completely different things. We are currently in an age of technology and many are worried about the effects of what these graphically advanced games can do. The problem is that many people are misinformed due to selective studies. We will explore what the real causes of these positive and negative effects are and what causes this skewed perception of first-person shooter games. Chr...... middle of paper ...... we are men. I have never been close to an even amount or balance. There was never a placebo group either. Sources would only say that the experience is slightly limited. Additionally, groups that focused on the negative aspects of gambling focused only on excessive gambling, while sources that focused on the positive aspects focused only on moderate gambling. My conclusion is that there is not enough data to make statements such as first person shooters being the root cause of anything without specific details and clarification. Through my study, I concluded that unhealthy long durations cause an increase in aggression and violence in the short term. Short, rigorous play times in controlled environments can also lead to short-term improvements in skills such as motor skills and spatial reasoning. Everything else needs to be determined by future studies and is currently not accessible.
