Essay / The God of Small Things - 956
"The colonized peoples are not simply those whose work has been appropriated but those whose souls inhabit an inferiority complex created by death and the burial of their originality local culture" How true is this statement "I agree with this statement to a large extent. I believe that the souls of colonized peoples live in an inferiority complex created both by colonial domination and by the death and burial of local cultural originality. Furthermore, I believe that "inferiority complex" and "death and burial of cultural originality" will later become two components of a vicious circle over time. It is easy to understand that the colonized peoples are those whose physical labor has been appropriated. People's lives are always influenced by government, politics and economics. Colonized peoples are under the rule of a foreign country and their government is led by a foreign leader. They must obey the laws set by the government. So their lives are in reality controlled by the foreigners and, in theory, they are the property of the foreign ruler. I believe that colonial rule will create an inferiority complex among the colonized people. Evidence can be found in the book "The God of Small Things". The book takes place in India. India was defeated by Britain several centuries ago and then became a British colony. During the colonial rule which lasted for more than a century, the British contributed to the development of India and thus to the raising of the standard of living of Indians. Stable life under British rule contrasted sharply with the poverty and starvation that commonly prevailed in the past under local government rule. Indians began to think that their culture was inferior to that of the foreign ruler....... middle of paper ......to "the death and burial of local cultural originality" creates a complex of inferiority among the colonized peoples. However, over time, their feelings of inferiority cause people to accept more foreign ideas. As more foreign ideas are accepted and foreign culture has a greater impact on people, local cultural originality may be forced to "die." A vicious circle is then created. Overall, it is entirely accurate to say that “the colonized are not simply those whose labor has been appropriated but those whose souls inhabit an inferiority complex.” This inferiority complex is not only created by the death and burial of local cultural originality, but also by colonial domination. Moreover, the inferiority complex between people and the death of cultural originality are complementary, they will be in a vicious circle over time..
