University education also does many things for students, these things can be both counted and uncounted. Delbanco wrote on this subject: "The best reason to care about the university - who goes there, ... is not what it does for society in economic terms but what it can do for individuals, in ways that are both calculable and incalculable” (Delbanco 507). In the article, Delbanco recounts what one of the former students said to him next during one of his lectures. He discusses the experience of these former students in his article when he writes: "Not only did a college education enrich his ability to read demanding literary works and grasp fundamental political ideas, it also increased and deepened his alertness with regard to color and shape. melody and harmony...Such education is a protection against utilitarian values” (Delbanco 508). Delbanco also wrote how college education has remained the same in some ways for many years. He writes: “The tradition of liberal scholarship survived and flourished throughout European history, but remained largely the property of the ruling elites. The distinctive American contribution was the attempt to democratize it, to deploy it in the name of things. The American cardinal principle that all people, regardless of their origin, have the right to pursue happiness… is helpful in this quest. Educated people may be called “snobbish and narrow,” but this is not the case.
