Dreams have existed since the dawn of time. Why they occur, even today, remains a mystery. There have been debates over whether dreams are meaningless or important. Since the beginning of history, people have reported their dreams believing that they are codes or secret messages. (Young) In Truman Capote's novel In Cold Blood, Perry, one of the killers, dreamed that he was saved by a bird that took him to a new place described as "heaven." (Capote 93) Although the dreams gave Perry a sense of superiority, the meaning of his dream is fascinating but remains a mystery. Dream interpretation has brought insight and knowledge into what a person's subconscious can support. Experts have sought to explain what dreams actually contain. Although dream interpretation is criticized as ridiculous, many people believe that interpreting dreams is important for understanding their lives and their inner psyche. When someone says they had a dream, another may find it fascinating or completely boring. Dreams are a fascination because they recur often and sometimes change. No one can really explain why this happens, but some are determined to find out how. Because of this curiosity and fascination, some researchers find dreams captivating enough to study them. As if dreams weren't convincing enough, they discovered that a person goes through five stages of sleep: two stages of light sleep, two stages of deep sleep, and one stage of REM sleep which results in rapid eye movements. . Researchers found that when people wake up in different stages of sleep, they give different accounts of their sleep, regardless of the type of dream they just had. Since these stages occur, there are two types of dreams: paradoxical dreams and non-paradoxical dreams.
