There are three well-known types of therapies that autistic people often benefit from. Many people undergo occupational therapy (OT) sessions. Occupational therapists help individuals acquire the tools they need to accomplish daily tasks through therapy. Some therapeutic intervention programs include helping children with disabilities in school settings. However, they often also help individuals recover from an accident and provide support to adults and other individuals. An occupational therapy session will generally include an individual assessment session. Part of this assessment may include the therapist examining the environments in which the client spends the majority of their time (e.g., home, school, or the workplace). After the assessment, therapists will meet with the client and possibly their family to decide on a goal. and discuss a plan to get there. Over the next few months, they will stick to the plan while working toward their goal. The therapist can focus on changing the environment to better suit the individual. (Aota.org, 2014) Occupational therapy plays an important role in the treatment of autism. Teachers and parents often work with occupational therapists to assess performance of different tasks throughout the day and set specific goals for the child. These may include how he behaves in public, interacts with others, or behaves in class, or all of the above. Therapists are often called in to evaluate a child performing daily activities to determine what care is needed. The therapist can then develop a program unique to the individual. These specific strategies can help the child improve their skills in various situations.
