Most people take the simple things in life for granted. But for others, these simple things are big struggles. Things like social skills and staying focused are challenges for autistic people. When you look up the definition of autism, the most common thing that pops up is “Difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behaviors” (What is autism?). But the difficulties of autistic people vary depending on their type. Across the five different ASD (autism spectrum disorder) disorders, there are many variations of symptoms and affected individuals. People living with autism face tough struggles every day. Autism is a very broad word used to describe disorders of brain development. Another word used to describe the wide variety of disorders is autism spectrum disorder or ASD for short. Autism spectrum disorders are divided into different categories depending on the symptoms. The different categories are classified according to the following criteria: difficulties with social skills, repetitive behaviors and verbal and non-verbal communication. (What is autism?) One in eighty-eight children in the United States has ASD, and this figure is higher among males. (Autism Spectrum Disorder) The mildest form of autism is Asperger's syndrome. Affecting men three times more often than women. Usually, children with Asperger's syndrome become obsessed with a certain object or subject. If they become obsessed with a topic, they will talk about it all the time and learn as much as possible. Although this helps people with this disorder have normal to above average intelligence, their social skills are greatly lacking. This program helps children from birth to age three. The program helps them talk, walk and teaches them how to interact with others. Even if a child has not been diagnosed with ASD, they can still use these services. (Treatment)One in eighty-eight children is autistic. This is a considerable increase over the last forty years. While there is no explanation for this rapid increase, there are many ways to help. (What is autism?) Because autism is on the rise, everyone should know about it. Without knowing the facts, if you have an autistic person around you, you won't know it. Don't take anything for granted, people living with autism have a daily struggle to accomplish daily activities that we don't think twice about. You never know what you have until you put yourself in someone else's shoes..
