When students at Farmingdale State College are asked about Aramark, they simply associate it with the food served on campus. They don't know that Aramark has a whole history and that there are many facets to this business. Not only does Aramark Corporation cater to different colleges across the country, but it also offers uniform services, among other things. Aramark was formed from the merger of two business owners, Davre Davidson and Bill Fishman. These two men owned two peanut sales businesses. In 1959, after merging, they incorporated their new company as Automatic Retailers of America, Inc. (ARA). In the first year of operation, the company earned $24 million. Over the next 10 years, ARA grew at a rapid pace, obtaining 150 small vending companies (“History of Aramark Corporation – FundingUniverse”). The largest company purchased by ARA was Slater Company in 1961 for $15 million. At the time, Slater Company was the largest restaurant company in the United States. By purchasing Slater Company, ARA became a diversified restaurant company. This purchase expanded them into new markets; they have expanded into institutional markets such as colleges and universities (“History of Aramark Corporation – FundingUniverse”). Even though they were quite large, ARA still wanted to expand further.
