Essay / Taxes as Causes of Revolutions - 1694
Taxes are one of the main causes of many revolutions and rebellions, including the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and other rebellions. Taxation is a system that the government uses to make money, they earn this money to support the government and provide public services. The government can guarantee its profits without taxes on natural resources, products or services. (Taxation 1) America is a place where taxes were and still are a problem in society. Many rebellions and wars were caused by increased taxes. Fleming highlights the fact that “No Taxes Without Representation” was one of the famous slogans of the time. the era of the American Revolution; this slogan means that Americans were being taxed by the British without cause, which was one of the main causes of the American Revolution. In 1776, Americans had the highest incomes in the world, were taxed the least, and produced one-seventh of the world's iron output. With the Americans far above everyone else, Britain decided that the Americans would have to pay the price (Fleming 1). This is important because America was taxed the least, then Britain started taxing Americans, causing a revolution. This makes America do well without being bombarded with taxes, so they bombarded the British. America thought the war against Britain would be a short, violent war, with the British bankrupt. America thought it might not be able to send a large army to fight. Britain proved America wrong by sending over 30,000 troops into battle. America surprised Britain and gained its independence by adapting to guerrilla warfare (Fleming 2). While America thought it could bring down the British very easily by raising their taxes, it was unprepared for a war and was in the middle of paper. They do not pay their private bank note (Nelson 2). Another rebellion caused by taxes was Bacon's Rebellion. Bacon's Rebellion happened in Virginia in 1676, it was caused by high taxes and a few other things. Nathaniel Bacon, the leader of the rebellion, led two successful expeditions against the tribes, but Bacon was arrested. When he was released, he burned down Jamestown. Thanks to Bacon, the aristocracy maintained power and taxes were reduced. (Bacon 1) Nathaniel Bacon was very upset by the increase in taxes. By burning down Jamestown, it showed the aristocracy that was in power that raising taxes may not have been the best thing for the economy at that time. the groups and the country all decide to do something to get revenge on whoever caused the tax increase.
